What is the Meaning of a Tree of Life Panel?
A Tree of Life Panel is a decorative artwork or wood carving depicting a tree with spreading branches, roots, and often animals, flowers, or mythological elements around it. In Balinese and Hindu culture, as well as in many ancient traditions around the world, the Tree of Life carries deep symbolic meaning.
What it Represents:
Connection between Heaven, Earth, and the Underworld
The roots go deep into the ground, the trunk represents the human world, and the branches reach towards the sky — symbolizing the connection between the spiritual, physical, and ancestral realms.
Growth, Harmony, and Eternal Life
The tree reflects life's continuous cycle of birth, death, and rebirth — with new leaves replacing the old.
Protection and Blessings
In Balinese belief, the Tree of Life (locally sometimes connected with the Kalpataru or Wishing Tree) grants blessings, prosperity, and protection to those who place it in their homes or temples.
Where it’s Commonly Seen:
Carved panels in Balinese temples (pura)
Decorative walls in homes or spiritual spaces
Handcrafted wood panels, jewelry, or paintings
It’s both a spiritual and artistic element, symbolizing balance, unity, and the sacred cycle of nature.
