Chicken Basket
Category: Bali • 11 Jul 2025 by balitirthawangi
In Bali, a chicken basket — locally called "Kuwungan" or "Krobokan" — is a traditional, dome-shaped basket made from woven bamboo. It’s primarily used to house and transport chickens or roosters, especially those bred for Tajen (ceremonial cockfighting) or for keeping chickens safe in village homes.
These baskets are typically:
Portable, lightweight, and durable
Shaped like a dome or a bell, with a small opening at the bottom
Designed to protect the chicken while still allowing air circulation and visibility
Besides practical use, in Balinese culture, the chicken basket can sometimes symbolize rural life and tradition. You’ll often see them lined up in village yards or at temple festivals where cockfights (for ceremonial purposes) are held.
