Old Man with Chicken
Category: Bali • 11 Jul 2025 by balitirthawangi
In traditional Balinese culture, an old man holding a chicken (often a rooster) is a familiar and symbolic image. It usually represents the Balinese practice of cockfighting, locally known as Tajen.
In ancient times, cockfighting was not just a form of entertainment, but also an important religious ritual. The fight would be part of a ceremonial offering to appease spirits and purify certain places, often held in temple ceremonies. The blood spilled from the fight was believed to cleanse and protect the community from evil forces.
While cockfighting for gambling is now illegal in Bali (except during religious ceremonies), the image of an old man with a rooster remains iconic — often seen in Balinese paintings, carvings, or daily life in villages. It reflects tradition, masculinity, and local wisdom passed down through generations.
