Siwa (known as Shiva in Sanskrit) is one of the principal deities in Hinduism and is part of the holy Hindu trinity called the Trimurti, alongside Brahma (the Creator) and Vishnu (Wisnu) (the Preserver). Siwa is revered as the Destroyer and Transformer — the god responsible for the cycle of destruction and regeneration in the universe.
In Balinese Hindu belief, Siwa holds a very important role not just as a destroyer, but also as a source of purification, spiritual wisdom, and cosmic balance.
Characteristics of Siwa:
Often depicted with matted hair, a third eye on his forehead (symbolizing inner vision and wisdom)
Carries a trident (trisula) representing the three fundamental aspects of existence: creation, preservation, and destruction
Associated with mountains, meditation, and ascetic life
Sometimes shown surrounded by a serpent, seated in deep meditation, or performing the cosmic dance of destruction (Tandava)
Siwa in Balinese Culture:
In Bali, Siwa is deeply integrated into temple rituals, spiritual ceremonies, and daily offerings. Many temples are dedicated to Siwa as a protector and purifier, and his attributes often appear in Balinese statues, carvings, and dances.
Balinese Hindus see Siwa not only as the destroyer but also as the god who clears away obstacles and negativity, allowing for new growth and harmony in the cosmos.
