Balinese Gate

A Balinese Gate, also known as Candi Bentar, is a traditional split gateway commonly found at the entrances of temples, palaces, and sacred sites in Bali, Indonesia. It is one of the most iconic architectural elements of Balinese culture.
The gate consists of two tall, symmetrical stone structures that stand facing each other, forming a passage in between. These split gates symbolize the balance between opposing forces — such as good and evil, the physical and spiritual worlds, or the human and divine realms.
Balinese gates are often intricately carved with floral patterns, mythological creatures, and sacred symbols. They serve not only as physical entrances but also as spiritual thresholds, marking the transition from the outer, secular world to a sacred, purified space within.
In recent years, Balinese gates have become popular tourist attractions and photo spots, with famous examples including the Handara Gate and the gates at Lempuyang Temple. Their majestic design and cultural significance make them enduring symbols of Bali’s rich artistic and spiritual heritage.
